Southern Compliance Association

The Southern Compliance Association (SCA)

was inaugurated on 1 April 2002, and was founded for the purpose of supplying its members with information on Mandatory & Regulatory Product Compliance (PC) issues.

The world wide regulatory PC scene is becoming ever more complex. In Europe alone, there are now well over 20 PC Directives applicable to the Electronics industry, and many more are planned. Every major trading block in the world has its own regulations. Keeping abreast of the current issues in PC is essential to most companies, but critical to Manufacturers, Importers, Exporters, Distributors, Retailers, Third Party Maintenance/Service suppliers etc.

In today’s competitive market it is crucial to have accurate and up to date compliance information readily available. Using incorrect or out of date information will inevitably lead to a company taking inadequate measures, resulting in business losses and the probability of prosecution. The major problem for UK companies, and particularly SME’s, is to find the time to keep up with this multifaceted and ever changing scenario.

This is where membership of the SCA will pay significant benefits, with all your PC issues made available in one place. Whilst acting as a hub for world wide PC issues; the SCA will naturally focus on the European “New Approach” Directives. These will include some of the well established ones, such as:

  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
  • Electrical Safety/Low Voltage (LVD)
  • Safety of Machinery (Machinery)
  • Explosive Atmospheres (ATEX)
  • General Product Safety (GPSD)
  • Product Liability
  • Radio and Telecommunication Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) etc.

Also included will be information (as it becomes available) on forthcoming Directives, such as:

  • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS),
  • Energy using Products (EuP)
  • Waste from Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

The SCA offers its members a range of Services including:

REGULAR MEETINGS:

The Meetings occur at a variety of venues covering the area, with typically 6 planned each year. The presenters at each meeting will be specialists in their field, and a copy of the presentations is placed on the member’s only section of the website thus building up a useful database in this way. There is ample opportunity to ask questions after each presentation, plus a general club discussion in which members can raise their individual problems on any related subject, and network with each other. The meetings are normally attended by UKAS Test Houses; Competent Bodies; Consultants and Product Suppliers, so the highest level of expertise is available.

MEMBERS ONLY WEBSITE:

The Website will include the following facilities:

An events calendar, showing SCA planned events; plus events that SCA members can attend FREE or at discounted prices

Direct Links to European or UK Government websites where Guidance Notes, Proposals and other relevant printed documents can be downloaded. There currently are more than 60 such links in this section covering a wide range of relative Directives. This feature will save many hours of searching through these complex websites for the correct information.

An archive of the PowerPoint presentations used by the speakers during the regular meetings described above. This is a valuable resource, regularly updated when speakers allow, stretching back over the last few years, showing how the present regulatory compliance area has developed.
